History:

The M1911, also known as the "Government" or "Colt Government", is a single-action, semi-automatic, magazine-fed, recoil-operated pistol chambered for the .45 ACP cartridge.  Browning's basic M1911 design has seen very little change throughout its production life

 

Colt 1911 in .455 Webley caliber is one of 10,500 pistols sold to the British Air Service /Royal Air Force contracts, between late 1917 & 1918.  For reference see Charles W. Clawson "Colt 45 government models" (Commerical Series).

 

The serial number search against the colt archive suggests 1919 manufacturer.

 

The colt 1911 remains one of the most popular handguns in the world.
